Historical Context

"Like a Virgin" was released on October 31, 1984. The musical landscape was dominated by synth-pop, new wave and the birth of MTV as a transformative cultural force. It was the era of Michael Jackson, Prince and Cyndi Lauper.

Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, the reception was explosive: it reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks. Catholic and conservative groups expressed outrage at the juxtaposition of religious imagery with sexual themes. In 2023, it was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

Musical Characteristics

The song is in F# major, with a tempo of approximately 118 BPM. Nile Rodgers, co-founder of Chic, produced the album with an elite rhythm section: himself on guitars, Bernard Edwards (Chic) on bass and Tony Thompson on drums. Robert Sabino added keyboards, mainly a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5.

The synthesized bass line is a reworking of the Four Tops classic "I Can't Help Myself". The production is minimalist but effective, with Tony Thompson's relentless drum sound as the lead instrument. The entire album was recorded at Power Station Studios in New York in just six weeks.

Trivia

• The performance that "ruined" her career (but didn't). At the first MTV VMAs (1984), Madonna descended from a giant wedding cake singing the song. When a heel came off, she improvised by rolling on the floor. Her manager said: "It's over, you've ruined your career." Ironically, it became one of the most iconic moments in music TV history.
• The song was originally a ballad. Steinberg and Kelly wrote it as a slow song and played it faster as a joke. That sped-up version turned out to be the definitive one.
• Blond Ambition Tour controversy (1990). Madonna choreographed the song on a religious-themed stage simulating masturbation. In Toronto, police threatened to arrest her for public indecency. She responded she would cancel the show rather than modify it.
